Another type of hair removal is epilation wherein the entirety of the hair is removed along with the part under the skin's surface. Ways of epilation may be sugaring, waxing, laser, electrology, threading or by using epilation devices. Plucking the hairs using tweezers is the simplest way of epilation.

Removing hair is being practiced for many years already and the ways differ in time and places, although the most common way is shaving. During the olden times in Egypt, a lot of people remove their hair to keep the fleas, lice or other parasites from infesting their bodies. In the past, before a surgery, a patient's hair is shaved for hygienic reason although it is not practiced now. Shaving is also an attempt to get lice or to lessen the bad odor of the body because micro-organisms that cause bad odor accumulate in the hair. For some people who are suffering from trichiasis, they remove their eyelashes. It is also common for patients with cancer to have their head shaved before they start with chemotherapy because this results to severe and irregular loss of hair.

In other cultures, people remove their hair because they want to be accepted by the society. Some people get embarrassed because of excessive hair. Some men shave the hair on their faces to get that clean and hairless appearance while some men do it because the strands of their hair on the face are coarse and cause itchiness.
